Sonic Visions Music Conference & Festival Wed, 20 Jun 2018 10:53:17 +0000 en-GB hourly 1 SONIC VISIONS at Primavera Pro 2018: promoting Luxembourg at Spain’s most important music industry meeting Wed, 20 Jun 2018 10:53:17 +0000 It is now the fifth year in a row that Luxembourg’s music conference and festival Sonic Visions has presented a high level discussion panel at the Primavera Pro conference in Barcelona. Driven by innovation and a strong desire to make music industry and tech topics accessible for artists, musicians and creative entrepreneurs, Sonic Visions made the decision to focus on one of 2018’s most discussed topics: Blockchain technology and its opportunities for the music and creative industries.

The panel composed of three experts – Olivier Zephir (Technoport Incubator: Luxembourg),
Sammy Andrews (Deviate, UK) and Turo Pekari (Teosto Futures Lab, Finland) – and moderated by UK based artist manager Jake Beaumont-Nesbitt (IMMF), gave the audience the chance to see how Blockchain is currently being used by artists and music professionals such as Imogen Heap and Björk and what scenarios we might expect to see in the future.

“Participating in Primavera Pro gives us the opportunity to position certain topics that will be part of the focus of our conference in November and also further improve our networking with the music industry professionals and artists from the South of Europe. With Luxembourg bridging some of Europe’s most important music markets, our participation at the Primavera Pro conference as a panel host is part of a broader strategy to position Sonic Visions and Luxembourg as one of the creative hotspots for music, tech, innovation and entrepreneurship in Europe.” says Sonic Visions conference coordinator Sam Reinard.

Sonic Visions conference and music festival takes place on 16 and 17 November 2018 in Esch / Alzette (Luxembourg). Once again it will give the opportunity to discuss the most relevant topics for artists and music professionals and to also showcase some of the best music made in Luxembourg.

As part of Primavera Sound, one of Luxembourg’s most promising electronic music acts Napoleon Gold performed two sets on June 1st in front of international industry professionals and an impressive festival crowd with the support of the Luxembourg Export Office Music:LX. Napoleon Gold will also perform at this year’s edition of Sonic Visions.

Sonic Visions goes Primavera Tue, 15 May 2018 14:32:22 +0000 Sonic Visions will return to Barcelona to host a panel atthe music conference Primavera Pro. This year’s session will take place on May 30 and discusses the blockchain ecosystems for artists and the music industry.

30 May 2018 / 16:00 – 17:00 / CCCB (Auditori)

Blockchain appears to offer the potential of a faster and more transparent experience for anyone involved with creating or interacting with music. Decentralised and accessible data, smart contracts instead of music industry middlemen and more transparency for rights holders and artists are some of the things associated with blockchain technology.

This panel will take a closer look at how blockchain technology can be used or is already being used by musicians, creators and music professionals today. What do you need to know or who do you have to work with as an emerging artist or creator to most benefit from the potential? Who are the users and who are the innovators?

Olivier Zephir (Technoport Incubator)

All about Sonic Visions 2017! Sun, 19 Nov 2017 16:34:20 +0000 Sonic Visions Music Conference & Festival
Sonic Visions celebrated its 10th anniversary with a successful move to the new festival site at the blast furnaces of Esch – Belval. Within the magnificent setting dominated by the impressive architecture of Luxembourg’s industrial past, three days entirely dedicated to music charmed the public: a mix of local and international artists and industry professionals attending the conference, a festival crowd longing to see their favourite bands and ready to discover plenty of new music, as well as people enjoying delicious food at the Sonic Visions Food Market or partying at Thursday’s After Work powered by Agora. The unique atmosphere of Belval’s ancient steel factory, illuminated at night by the marvellous decoration made by the festival “Nuits des Lampions de Wiltz”, perfectly matched the sound and vibe of the eclectic line-up of the three festival stages.

 The Music Conference
Sonic Visions music conference saw more than 500 delegates coming from all over Europe to attend three days of panels, workshops, networking events and inspiring keynotes and connect with Luxembourg’s music and creative scene. With more than 100 speakers from 20 different countries Sonic Visions again proofed to be the leading event for the music scene in Luxembourg and the Greater Region, and has become a confirmed rendez-vous in the circuit of the European music conferences and showcase festivals.

Three important European projects in which Rockhal and Sonic Visions participate presented themselves at the conference:

  • Multipistes, a Greater Region training & education program gathering 5 initiatives and structures from France, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg
  • Liveurope, with the Rockhal as one of its founding members, aims to support concert venues in their efforts to promote emerging European artists. It has seen a growth of more than 35% in its activities over the first three years. It has recently secured another four years of co-funding by the EU Creative Europe program.
  • INES – The Innovation Network for European Showcase Festivals, a project that connects some of the best European showcase festivals with the aim to connect the music markets of the participating countries and to provide education and training for artists and music professionals throughout its members. Sonic Visions is one of the founding members of this project that receives a funding by the Creative Europe program of the EU as one of only 15 large-scale cooperation projects. Activities will start beginning of 2018.

The first conference day with its panels and many meeting opportunities put a focus on music in the Greater Region (Luxembourg and the surrounding parts for Belgium, France and Germany) thus establishing, maintaining and growing the networks between these important European music markets.

The Second day started with the opening speech of Luxembourg’s Secretary of State for Culture, Guy Arendt who underlined the importance of Sonic Visions as an event that creates synergies on a local, regional and international scale for the national music scene. It was followed by a multitude of panels, meetings and workshops like e.g. the panel discussing the importance of music journalism in the age of YouTube and Instagram and an inspiring debate on the value of data and the role of collecting societies in the digital age that was presented by Sacem Luxembourg.

Highlights of the day were the two keynotes by:

  • Benji Rogers, founder of PledgeMusic and cofounder of the Dot Blockchain Music Project
  • Imogen Heap, Grammy award winning artist and founder of music collective and collaboration community Mycelia

Saturday covered a wide range of topics with hands-on workshops, such as how to set up your first business in the creative industries in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce of Luxembourg. Experts from Austria, Belgium, Iceland and the Faroer Islands gave insights the current situation and challenges for the music industries of smaller countries. “Meet the filmmakers” brought together the conference delegates with professionals from Luxembourg’s lively film industry.

Over the past years Sonic Visions has grown continuously and, as it’s all about “Tomorrow’s Music Experience”, this conference connects music, technology and the creative industries, fostering creativity and entrepreneurship.
