LINE UP 2008

LINE UP 2008

Glitter and Trauma (LUX)

They’re young, resourceful, a little roguish, but they understand very well that these days rock belongs to the new generation (Bloc Party, Klaxons and Kings of Leon in the lead). Far however from copying these new benchmark performers, Glitter and Trauma impose a sound and an identity which is very much their own. The style is slightly hotchpotch but devilishly contagious!

Cascadeur (F)

Cascadeur is a handyman working on his own. A do-it-yourself enthusiast, he arms himself with instruments and samples and pushes pop chanson as high as the skies. Ethereal, sensitive and sometimes lyrical, his style is undeniably the most captivating. A Syd Matters to come!

Local Club (B)

Following that great line of Belgian groups which dare to experiment, this group from the Virton region has proved itself to be one of the best representatives of the genre. One by one their music reveals the phantom of Tom Barman (dEUS), the gentle madness of Daan and even the emotion of Girls in Hawaï.

Sulivan (LUX)

“Lovers on a Bad Day”, the first album by the Luxembourg group Sulivan surprised everyone! For the first time, a local group dared to converge with benchmarks like Starsailor, Keane and Arid. Emotion in bucket-loads, a fragile voice and a great future in store for these four talented youngsters!

Emily Jane White (USA)

Folk, blues, emotion, …  Emily Jane White is one of those songwriters who, rather like Aimee Mann or Cat Power, lifts the heart with just two guitar chords. “Dark Undercoat”, her latest album is basically sombre and seems to shun the light. But all the better, because it adds to the mystery of an artist who is already a cult figure in the United States!

Chapelier Fou (F)

Winner in 2008 of the last pre-selections for “Printemps de Bourges” – Lorraine/Luxembourg, Chapelier Fou has no equal in manipulating electronic music. Without fear or reproach, he seasons classical music, upturns it the better to dissect it and reinvents it under his own rules, to create a unique show!

The Rones (B)

A Belgian group above all? Perhaps … but in any event a group to be reckoned with in years to come. An improbable cross between dEUS and Triggerfinger, The Rones heat their amplifiers to a maximum and pour out an alternative rock tinted with electro and terribly effective. A must!

Versus You (LUX)

Do the Luxembourgers of Versus You need any further introduction? A punk-rock group already emblematic in the Grand Duchy, it is also one which is best exported beyond our borders. It’s true that its members fell into the musical cauldron at a very early age, and that has enabled them now to have reached an impressive maturity. As at ease opening for Avril Lavigne as for The Hives, Versus You are a concentrate of raw energy!

THE HICKEY UNDERWORLD (B)

Another Belgian group (this time from the Antwerp region) and another facet of rock! With The Hickey Underworld, rock dusted off, gnawed to the bone and spat out again in a way not unknown to The (International) Noise Conspiracy! Raw, direct and without embellishment, here is a group which knows how to get down to the bare essentials!

I’m from Barcelona (S)

Last January, when they first came to the Rockhal, the Swedes of I’m from Barcelona revealed the entire armoury of a group which has no complex, playing as much with trifles as their instruments. This new-genre “choir” is now releasing its new album entitled “Who Killed Harry Houdini?” So come and (re)discover them at the Sonic Visions Festival!

Arsenal (B)

This is a group which is difficult to categorise. Arsenal defies the codes of electro/pop music in order to reappropriate them, adding a totally unique aspect. Fond of collaborations in any genre, in 2005 Arsenal released a glittering album entitled “Outsides”, which mixed African rhythms with alternative rock or purely electronic music. “Lotuk”, the new album to arrive very soon, should confirm them as one of the ‘dead certs’ of the Belgian musical scene!
